Mixed reactions have trailed the United States’ announcement of $32.5 million (about N50 billion) in food assistance to Nigeria amid the nation’s worsening food crisis.
The aid is directed at internally displaced persons in conflict-hit communities across the North-East and North-West.
Under the plan, 43,235 children will receive specialized nutrition support via electronic food vouchers, while 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women will get complementary nutrition top-ups.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that persistent violence and funding shortages could force the closure of more than 150 nutrition clinics in Borno and Yobe states, at a time when Nigeria is facing one of its worst food emergencies in decades.
According to the US Embassy, WFP Nigeria will deliver essential food and nutrition aid to 764,205 people across both regions.
@USinNigeria via its verified page on X formerly called Twitter wrote; “With a $32.5 million contribution from the U.S. Government, the World Food Program Nigeria will provide vital food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 people across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and children in conflict-affected areas.”
