Popular Nigerian filmmaker Kazim Adeoti has opened up about the qualities that attracted him to Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe, which eventually led to their marriage.
In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Adeoti — who is also the CEO of Ibaka TV — described Aigbe as a “truthful and straightforward” woman. He said her honesty stood out in an industry often driven by money.
He recalled a moment from 2011 during the filming of Hajia Jemila, which featured Aigbe. After paying her for the role, Adeoti said he was surprised when she returned the next day to point out that he had overpaid her — a rare gesture that left a lasting impression on him.
He said; “What I really admire about her is her honesty and straightforwardness, it’s something I truly respect. I remember back in 2011 when she starred in a film titled Hajia Jemila. After I paid her, I was already used to people complaining that the fee was too small.
But in her case, she actually came back to tell me there was leftover money. I was genuinely shocked. At the time, many people advised me to only work closely with men if I wanted to succeed in the industry. But I decided to give her a chance, and she completely changed my perspective.
She’s not only a woman but a beautiful one at that and still, she acted with so much integrity. Honestly, I never collected that remaining money from her, and we continued working together from there.”
The couple went public with their relationship in January 2022, stirring controversy after Adeoti’s first wife, Funsho, accused Mercy Aigbe of “snatching” her husband. Despite the backlash, Adeoti defended his decision to take a second wife.
In 2023, Aigbe publicly embraced Islam, attributing her conversion to her deep love for Adeoti and their commitment to building a life together.
