Liverpool and Portuguese forward, Diogo Jota, has been declared dead two weeks after his wedding.
Reports making the rounds online asserted that 28-year-old Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain.
Sky Sports News has confirmed Jota’s death through the Guardia Civil in Zamora, where the accident occurred.
A statement from the Zamora Provincial Council read: “Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the Consortium) responded. The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to nearby vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”
Jota began his football career in Portugal, coming through the Paços de Ferreira academy before joining Atlético Madrid in 2016. However, he never made a senior appearance for the La Liga club, instead spending loan spells at Porto — his hometown — and then Wolves, where he secured a permanent move in 2018.
He spent two years at Wolves under fellow Portuguese coach Nuno Espírito Santo before signing for Liverpool in September 2020.
With Liverpool, he won the Premier League, as well as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and featured in the club’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the 2021/22 Champions League final, coming on as a substitute.
Jota made his debut for Portugal in November 2019 and went on to play at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, although he missed the 2022 World Cup due to injury. He won the Nations League twice with the national team, including the most recent edition in May.
