Emotional reactions have begun to pour in after a video surfaced showing Diogo Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, in tears as she left her late husband’s funeral home.
The football world is still reeling from the tragic loss of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who both died in a car accident on Thursday.
The two brothers were traveling in an acid-green Lamborghini as Jota planned to catch a ferry to England later that morning to resume pre-season training.
Their car reportedly veered off the road after a tyre burst while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The car caught fire on impact, killing both brothers instantly.
In a video now going viral on X, shared by Jaleos El Español, Rute Cardoso can be seen leaving the funeral home in tears after bringing her husband’s body back from Spain.
The funeral home is located in Gondomar, the town where the couple first met and began dating as teenagers. A private wake was held at a Catholic chapel just 30 minutes from the place where they got married on June 22.
The wake for the late footballers was held at São Cosme Chapel in Gondomar and was attended by close family and friends, including FC Porto president André Villas-Boas.
Among those present were the players’ mother, Isabella, their father and grandfather, who were joined by football super-agent Jorge Mendes, who had represented Jota during his career. According to the Daily Star, the mayor of Gondomar declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a day of municipal mourning in honor of the brothers, who were both residents of the town.
