Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has stirred fresh conversation online after revealing why she’s thankful she never had a son with her husband, Barack Obama.
The 61-year-old Becoming author made the candid remark during a new episode of her IMO podcast, which she co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson.
While speaking with radio host Angie Martinez—who playfully suggested Michelle “should have thrown a boy in the mix”—the mother of two laughed and responded bluntly:
“I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy… Because he would have been a Barack Obama. Ooh.”
Michelle shook her head in mock despair, drawing laughter from her co-hosts. Trying to lighten the moment, Martinez chimed in with a positive spin, adding:
“Baby Barack! It would have been amazing.”
But Michelle quickly interjected:
No, I woulda felt for him.”
The former First Lady’s relief over not having a son comes from her belief that her husband, Barack Hussein Obama II, would have insisted on naming him Barack Obama III.
Barack Obama, the 44th president and the first Black person to hold the office, was named after his father, Barack Hussein Obama.
The elder Obama was a Kenyan economist and government official who met the future president’s mother, anthropologist Stanley Ann Dunham, while they were both students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the 1960s.
The Obamas have faced ongoing divorce rumors in recent months, fueled by Michelle’s noticeable absence from several high-profile events earlier in the year, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
